Mini Dress Season

An edit of this season’s cutest mini dresses.

Let me start this post off by saying it has been the longest time since I’ve worn mini dresses. I usually prefer midis and maxis with knee length being the shortest I’ve worn in a while due to my extremely active mom-of-a-toddler lifestyle. Preferences, needs, and tastes change, however, and while during my youngest’s baby years, wearing a mini dress just wasn’t conducive to hauling around a car seat, diaper bag, wiggly baby and all the bending and lifting and tied up hands that the stage requires, my current lifestyle allows me a bit more freedom in wardrobe choices. I bought a really unique dress, that happens to be a mini, last fall and loved the ease of having a greater percentage of legs unencumbered by fabric. Both for practical and sartorial reasons, I can surely say I am back in the mini dress game. Southern summers aren’t for the weak (it’s me, I’m weak) and light fabrics, single layers, and air-flow take priority over literally everything else during sweltering hot days. I’ve already inadvertently stumbled upon a few really cute mini options (thank you Instagram ads), and thus took on the search in earnest because let’s face it, even if we’re not traveling to exotic distant locales, summer is still a pretty exciting season – especially for fashion!

For hot summer days, I always choose natural fabrics like cotton, or high-quality linen as they are the most breathable, cooling fabrics you can wear. Top it off with a flattering sun hat for some personal shade, and a chic pair of sandals and you’ve got a well-styled look that’s also practical and comfortable in the heat. Mini dresses make excellent pool or beach cover ups as well as day-time or date-night choices, too. The white milk maid style mini is my favorite and might be my next purchase after recently buying a midi style in the pink and white stripe below. Lilac and gingham are utterly timeless, like French ticking stipe – which is really hard to come by – as well as blue and white check. These are prints and patterns and color palettes that will hold fast against changing trends that will be seasonal favorites for years to come. There are a couple designer dupes on this list, too!
