A Preppy Fall Outfit + Houndstooth Plaid & Swiss Dot Ruffles

I scored big a few years ago when I bought this wool-blend skirt on the cheap from J. Crew Factory; it’s been one of my favorite fall wardrobe staples ever since. Paired with old and new pieces, like this French blouse, gold jacquard headband, and suede boots, I’ve created an updated look that is as autumnal as the vibrant colors all around this time of year.

Every year I find one way of styling this skirt that I prefer above all else, and this year this is it. The skirt has been brought back for AW21 in a more grown-up a-line silhouette but utilizing this same beautiful wool-blend fabric that I adore. Warm enough for chilly days with a pair of tights or high boots, and the perfect early fall transition piece.

I introduced you to this elegant Victorian-style blouse a few weeks ago in this post, and it has been by far my favorite new item of the season! I love that it’s made of organic cotton, which makes is extremely soft to the touch, and all of the gorgeous feminine ruffle details make it pretty enough to stand alone, or make a subtle statement peeking out beneath a blazer, jacket, or sweater. The smocked cuffs are a brilliant and thoughtful design feature, especially for us homemaker mamas who are constantly needing to roll up their sleeves. Most long sleeves stretch out and look floppy and unkept by the end of the day but these held their shape and still looked chic after endless dishes, two loaves of sourdough, and a full day of homeschool!

Another clutch piece in any fall wardrobe is a Gucci belt. I particularly love this designer’s logo belt, although there are so many chic ones out there, because of it’s curvy, aesthetically pleasing shape. You just can’t get a more perfect tan shade than this one either – they really nailed it with this versatile, season-less piece – hats off to them!

Picking up the a nearly identical shade are these knee-high boots that I’ve had forever, and love wearing once it’s finally cold enough here in Virginia. If you’d ask me which I prefer, over-the-knee boots or tall/knee-high boots, hands down the latter. OTK boots tend to wiggle their way down and require constant adjusting, and if you’re petite like me it’s really hard to get the right shaft height. Knee boots are a much safer bet, even for petites, and good quality ones will stay straight and upright without slouching.

Houndstooth plaid, warm wool, various shades of brown, billowing sleeves, ruffled collars, buttery suede, knee-high boots, and a padded headband; I don’t think you can get any more autumnal than this! I really love this outfit; full of versatile pieces that give me years of styling possibilities, natural materials, and a seasonal color palette. This look is so simple to recreate, too. Have a great weekend, dear reader!

xo, Mia
