Southern Charm + Day Three

On our third and final day in Charleston, we wanted to make sure we took in all the southern charm this beautiful city has to offer. Beginning with the longest continually operating plantation in the United States.

Boone Hall Plantation

After another delicious buffet breakfast at Swamp Fox in the Francis Marion Hotel, we headed to Boone Hall Plantation. Just 20 minutes from the heart of historic Charleston in Mount Pleasant, the plantation offers a unique step back in time.

Upon arrival, you’re welcomed by this stunning and quintessentially southern driveway. Live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss transport you back in time.

To a time when life was much harder.

The history of the plantation is fascinating. We toured the house, which was built in the 1930s and is actually the fourth house to stand in this spot over the plantation’s colorful history. We then roamed the English-style garden, took a ride through the extensive former cotton fields and listened to a guide talk about what life was like for the slaves who lived and worked at Boone Hall Plantation.

After about 3 hours at Boone Hall, we headed back into town for a light lunch and more exploring before dinner!

South of Broad

Just across from our hotel is the Hotel Bennett, where we stopped at La Patisserie for some quiches and decadent French pastries! I had the veggie quiche (a bit too runny due to too many onions), Layla had the Loraine and we shared a Royal pastry and a S’mores danish. All very good, but I highly recommend the S’mores danish but only if you like dark chocolate!

After that, we set off for the legendary South of Broad area of Charleston.

And it did not disappoint – history everywhere.

Unique architecture, colorful shutters, and beautiful plants bursting from every bit of stone and brick.

By the time we reached the end of King Street, my family had abandoned me and my camera and were watching the boats and waves roll by from White Point Gardens. We made our way across the park and up another street…

…where I found one facade that I was particularly fond of…of all the many breathtaking homes, I’m not sure what it was about this one.

Of course, we had to have some Carolina barbecue for dinner at least once, so we ate at a place recommended by our relatives who were also in town at the same time; Poogan’s Smokehouse. I really don’t eat pork (yes, that includes bacon) but their pulled pork sliders were delicious!

We decided it was fitting to end the trip the same way we began. By getting some ice cream treats and heading to Waterfront Park for one more sunset.
