3 Easy Ways to Wear a Long Cardigan

On the first day of spring I packed away all of my winter wardrobe. A bit early? Nope. I’m over the heavy fabrics and copious layers. Dark colors, be gone! I’m not the only one who feels this way though. Sweet Lilly, at just 2 years old has eschewed wearing her puffer coat for the season, busted out the skirts and shorts and won’t wear any other pair of shoes but her favorite Mini Melissa bow sandals. Bless her sweet Florida-born heart, she is NOT a cold weather baby.

While we’re good and ready for consistent 72 degrees and sun (this is Maryland though, so I’ll keep dreaming), the thermometer (or as Lilly calls it, the “monimer”) just can’t seem to stay above 60. And since needs must, light layering is now the name of the game. So, here are 3 easy ways to wear a long cardigan for spring that are chic, comfortable and with this particular cardigan, just the right amount of warm for spring!

Chic and classic

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen this one. I just love it! It’s chic, classic and deceptively comfortable! I mean, make it to the end of the day without wanting to rip it all off and just put pajamas on, comfortable. Plus, it’s a basic look that you can change up any number of ways with different accessories. Tan and black are a classic color combo, add the perfect white oxford for a look you can wear almost anywhere. These jeans, I basically never take off, they’re the best! Just the right amount of stretch, the perfect length (I look for the ones with a 26-28 inch inseam) and a classic look, plus I can always get them at a great price at Nordstrom Rack. I chose a pointed-toe sling-back low-heel for a current take on an outfit that transcends trends. Not visible is my favorite gold, dainty necklace from my birthday and my favorite Kate Spade gold studs. Classic.

Casual and preppy

Continuing the skinny jeans and button-down (or button-up?) shirt formula, the second easy way to wear a long cardigan is with a preppy patterned blouse that I’ve tied at the waist instead of tucked for a more casual feel. This look is great because it looks completely put together with, or without the cardigan and as this blouse is super light-weight, it will be comfortable in summer too. I chose white jeans over blue denim for a fresh, spring look and paired my favorite navy accessories pulling from second color in the blouse. These Kate Spade flats were a lucky TJ Maxx find last year and I’ve been searching for another pair ever since, but with no avail. I’ve linked a few similar pairs because honestly, every lady should have at least a few butter-soft nappa leather ballet flats in their wardrobe! Finally, pearl finishes are a must when dressing preppy – I chose a double-sided pearl earring.

First outfit: Long Cardigan color: beige melange | Oxford | Jeans | Slingbacks (sold out) similar – here, and here | Handbag | Necklace | Earrings – similar | Lip color – Glace

Second outfit:
Blouse color: classic navy | Jeans | Ballet flats – similar, here and here | Handbag (the BEST zip tote!) | Earrings | Lip color- Pink glow

Third outfit:
Scalloped cami color: marine salt | Jeans (old) similar, here and here | Shoes color: blush leather| Clutch (vintage) similar | Scarf in cream/foral (tied as headband) | Earrings

Trendy and feminine

This last look combines old and new pieces for an outfit that’s bang on trend. A vintage woven clutch and a floral printed scarf tied as a headband add texture and a trendy, seasonal finish. The wardrobe staple, a scalloped camisole is partially tucked into light-wash ripped jeans that I’ve had for 30 years. Maybe not that long. By the way, light-wash, loose fitting jeans a.k.a “mom jeans” are currently having a moment, so you’ll be seeing looks like this all spring and summer long! How sweet are these earrings?! I am really sensitive to having any weight dangling from my ears, so I was overjoyed when I found these feather-light statement earrings – I’m all about gold and pearls! Lastly, the shoes! I am so excited for more occasions to wear these as the weather warms – they are the most comfortable high-heeled, strappy sandal I’ve found and literally go with everything!

Tell me friends, which of these three long cardigan looks is your favorite?!

xo, Mia
