A Pink & Gold Girl’s Room

Sometime last year, Nate and I decided it was time to update Layla’s room. Up until Christmas – when we gifted her all the trappings for her new theme – her room was a mish-mash of the remnants of a theme we picked out when she was three.

She’s eight now, so it was time to bid farewell the woodland animal theme and replace it with something that would both appeal to her now and not be outgrown in a few years. After all, she is nearing the cusp of pre-teen-hood (much to our horror), so I wanted a cohesive theme that was both girly but sophisticated; fun but not obnoxious and can easily adapt to new furniture and new spaces.

Shop: Pennant garland – SO MANY cute garlands from here!!

Pink, gold and white were the colors she chose and I took the reins on everything else.

Since we rent and are limited on what kind of decorating we can do, specifically in terms of paint, we decided to use these removable wall stickers in gold stripe. I actually prefer the look of a print on a feature wall to just one solid color – they were also quick and easy to apply and cost much less than paint!

We kept the original furniture, adding only a few small baskets, boxes and a storage ottoman that replaced her outgrown toy box.

Shop: Prism basket

I saw this prism storage basket a few years ago in a nursery on Pinterest and knew I had to buy it for Layla’s new room when I saw it was still available! I love the modern, yet elegant touch it adds to her feminine room! Bonus, it’s functional!

This bookshelf is original to the woodland theme, but these new fabric storage bins in white with gold foil dots tie it in with the new theme beautifully!

Shop: Fabric storage bins | Pin boards

I am super excited about these pin boards – they’re one of my favorite things in her new room! This is one of those more “grown-up” touches that will someday hang over a desk and can be adapted to her changing tastes as she is able to decorate them. Again, adding an interesting focal point to the wall without the use of paint or causing damage.

Shop: Glitter letter | Star garland

The monogram letter “L” adds a girlish personal touch – they also come in silver. Instead of using the sticky pads (I NEVER recommend using sticky strips in a house with little kids – so much damage!) on the back, we used thin, short nails and rested the letter on them.

The star garland was a super inexpensive Target find! It’s actually part of a set of three that I picked up in the party section for Lilly’s birthday over a year ago – they had just been sitting in my garage and I was so tickled to finally get to use them!

Shop: Quilt | Duvet cover | Shams | Sheets

One great way to update a room that’s portable and makes a big impact is with a new bedding set. This white/light pink duvet is from Pottery Barn Kids and is the softest cotton percale that keeps her cool in the summer. The light pink quilt at the end of the bed is the same super-soft percale and will be the perfect mid-weight blanket for warmer weather. I always try to buy everything organic for my family – sheets included – and I love Pottery Barn’s selection of pretty organic printed sheets for my girls!

How cute are these throw pillows?! I stumbled upon this awesome oversize gold sequin heart at Target and got the adorable gold foil dot bow pillow off Etsy! I’m obsessed with how they look together!

This is Layla’s favorite wall, mostly because of the new curtains and string lights, but I’m pretty proud of this mirror. I actually wanted this one but it was sold out and I didn’t think it would be back in stock anytime soon, so I made one from a metal wreath I found at Target during Christmas, and had Nate epoxy glue it to a piece of round glass I bought online.

Shop: Mirror

Finally, I’ve saved the best for last! For years, I’ve wanted to incorporate positive, inspiring and uplifting bible verses as art on Layla’s walls, but 99.99% of what you’ll find online is shabby-chic, or farmhouse style – NOT my thing! I finally located some scripture prints in gold foil and couldn’t be happier! Jessica, the shop-owner who handmade these, worked with me to get the exact fonts, sizes and foil colors I was looking for! Sounds expensive? Not at all. I even ordered one in silver for baby sister’s room!

When I saw the two gold glitter “Dream” and “Love” canvases at Home Goods, I jumped on them because they correspond so perfectly with the scripture hung above or below them!

Shop gold foil prints: “…within her…” | “With God…

Dream – “with God all things are possible” Matthew 19: 26.
Love – “I have loved you with an everlasting love” Jeremiah 31: 3.

For someone with zero design experience and zero guidance, I’m very happy with how it turned out! It’s a pink, gold and white glittery oasis for my sweet big girl that has potential to grow as she grows.

Most importantly, she loves her new bedroom!
