Brown in Georgetown

DSC_0708-3

Last weekend was a little bit of a special occasion. Nate returned from his nearly month long work trip out of the country and we were finally able to get a (very late) start on doing all the fun fall things families usually do this time of year.

Like wearing houndstooth skirts, cable knit sweaters and knee-high boots!

Ok that was just me.

But the weather was just right for this cozy autumnal ensemble!

Shop: Skirt | Shirt | Sweater | Necklace | Boots | Nail polish (the best color for fall!)

Luckily for us cold-weather lovers, this weekend was the first we’ve had of real fall weather so we decided to make the most of it! On Saturday we visited a local farm, which you can see a little bit of in my Instagram feed (linked on MatM homepage), and on Sunday made another trip up to Georgetown for some sightseeing and lunch.

Incidentally, we picked a day for our little outing that fell on “parents weekend” at Georgetown University. Restaurants were packed and sidewalks overflowed with visitors, college students and locals alike. Not the best for a stroller!

So we wandered off the well-beaten path a little bit to see some of the lovely, gaslamp-clad townhomes we enjoyed looking at all those months ago

High heels and uneven streets are a notoriously bad combination, but the thick heel of these knee-high boots made the trek much easier. Also, since the skirt and sweater both contain wool, this outfit was perfectly warm for walking around for a few hours in 53 degree – and extremely windy! – weather.

Not only is this skirt warm, it’s the perfect combination of autumnal colors in a classic houndstooth print! I immediately loved the multiple hues of brown with contrasting pops of blue and burgundy, the flounce gives an added feminine flair and know this skirt will get tons of use for many years.

And then it was time to eat.

We picked Clyde’s for it’s American, pub-style fare – the only kind of food to keep you warm and energized on a chilly day like this!

I instantly liked the atmosphere as it reminded me a lot of my favorite place on earth, London.

However, as is to be expected, the food was not as good as true London pub-fare.
We ordered parmesan crusted cauliflower with marinara for the table which was good but a much smaller portion than I thought it would be, there were enough for 3 small pieces per person. I had a veggie burger which was one of the more bland veggie burgers I’ve had, but saved by the sauce they give on the side. Nate had a Ruben and since he spent the last month probably eating MREs and ramen, he devoured it.

Sad for no cupcakes today

After lunch, we had planned to treat the girls (and me!) to a cupcake from the famous Georgetown Cupcakes. Sadly, each of the three times we went past it during our four hour outing, the line extended out the door and down the street and none of us had the patience for that.

Maybe, next time.

Tell me in the comments below, what is your favorite thing about fall?!
