A New Perspective On Rainy Days.

What this winter lacked in snow, this spring has made up for in rain! However, the few days of clouds, thunder and the wet stuff that we’ve had lately is nothing compared to the weeks and sometimes months of rain that we would get growing up in Ohio.

Back then, I couldn’t stand rainy days. I would always feel so disappointed waking up to a dark gray day. I could never find the energy or positivity to appreciate anything about rainy days, and just saw the rain as a hindrance to living life to the fullest.

What’s worse, it always frustrated me to take one step out of my house after carefully crafting my flat-ironed hairdo and having every strand kink and frizz, thus making my attempts at a put-together look utterly in vain. Wet shoes, wet jeans, wet and slimy leather interior of my car… not my cup of tea.

Then, as if by magic, a friend spoke a few words to me that forever and immediately changed my perspective on rainy days! He said that he in fact liked rainy days because “everything looks so fresh, so green”. I remember turning to looking out the window as he said that and seeing the day with a completely new perspective. Such a simple statement of the – what now seems – obvious, but it made such a profound impact on me, so much so that 10 years later I’m here writing a blog post about it!

Now, after living in not-rainy San Diego for four years and then not-as-rainy-as-we’d-hoped Florida for one year, I appreciate rainy days more than ever. I think it’s safe to say I even look forward to them, because sometimes sunshine and heat for months on end get to be a bit much. True story.

I cherish the opportunity to rest and slow down and the creative new ways to entertain oneself that rainy days encourage. Sometimes I just need to be forced to slow down otherwise I won’t, because I can’t. I look forward to the peaceful feeling of enjoying a cup of coffee, listening to classical music and glancing up to watch the storm periodically as I proceed with life’s demands. But what is the BEST thing about rainy days? Rainy nights! Nothing beats falling asleep to the gentle, melodic pitter-patter of rain. Nothing!

I love interacting with people and LOVE making new friends everywhere we go for this exact reason – everyone has a different perspective on something. Each time I hear something from someone that allows me to see things from a different angle, I feel like I’ve been given a little piece of treasure that I can add to my box. And life is all about filling your box, my friends!
